The
Mendota Heights City Council consists of a mayor and four council members
who are elected in November of even-numbered years. The mayor serves
a two-year term; the council members serve four-year staggered terms.
The mayor receives $4,500 annually for his elected service, and the
council members are paid $3,000 each per year.
The City Council exercises the following powers
and duties:

Enacts ordinances,
directs their enforcement, and, sets administrative policy. |

Approves the hiring
of all city employees. |
|

|
Manages the city's
finances operations by levying taxes, adopting budgets, auditing
accounts, borrowing money and designating depositories for city
funds. |

|
Establishes advisory
boards and commissions and appoints their members. |
|
·
|
Conducts inter-governmental
affairs with other units of government, including the state, county
and federal agencies. |

·
|
Guides development
in accordance with the comprehensive land use plan. |
|
·
|
Protects the long-range
welfare of the city and its residents by formulating policies that
will help the city solve future problems. |
The mayor's official
power is no greater than any other council member, and the office has
no veto power. The mayor executes official documents, makes appointments
subject to the approval of the council and presides at council meetings.
As the official head of the city, the mayor serves as spokesperson for
both the government and the community.
