Summer Playgrounds Summer 2010
Come join the fun at Summer Playgrounds. This new program was a hit with both kids and parents last summer. Online registration will begin Monday, March 22 at 6:00 p.m. for the Summer Playground programs. Walk-in registration available at City Hall beginning Tuesday, March 23 starting at 8:00 a.m.

JUNE14th, 15th, 16th, 18th (Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri.)

Time to get outdoors and explore the park and trails.  Kids will get hands on with a GPS (Geo-cashing) to find treasure, crafts, playground, parachute, relay games, plant some flowers, and invite parents to their own lemonade stand & more...

WEEK TWO — HAPPY TRAILS and TAILS?

JUNE 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 25th (Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri.) 

Bring your bike/helmet (morning session can ride big wheels/trike/bike etc...). Afternoon session will hit the bike trails to discover our nearby parks, using the GPS to find our way.  Camp songs, treasure and scavenger hunts. There will be a K9 Dog Demo and we will have a speaker on pet care/animal safety.  MHPD will meet with the kids on safety on our bikes/trails. Crafts/games & more.

Here is your chance to try every sport under the sun (and shade). Team and individual sports, on court and off, even board games!  Bring your BBall/Softball glove each day & favorite board game.

Time to get back to nature! Learn about MN Fish and their habitat (MinnAqua program introduced-both sessions) On Wed. please drop/pick up your child at Rogers Lake Park to fish. GPS used with treasure map. Hey what lives under that rock? Of course we will have nature games!  (Our Annual Fishing Derby is Wed night July 8, must register separately)

WEEK FIVE - WATER WORKS

JULY 19th, 20th, 22nd, 23rd (Mon, Tues, Thurs., Fri.) 
Please note change in program days. This  week of Summer Playgrounds will be held on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

This week is packed full of water and time to get wet!  Bring your suit each day and we will have BUCKETS of water fun, slip and slide, water balloons, bubble factory, water relays and water tag.  Then we will dry off and enjoy some crafts!

The final week of playgrounds the staff will take the most popular games and favorite activities from all the previous weeks and combine them into one FUNTASTIC week.  We will have a new craft project for the week and promise you more fun then a barrel of monkeys!

Cool off in this huge pool full of activities from thrilling waterslides to a sand and water play area and a lazy river.  Bring a bag lunch, your swimsuit, towel and sunscreen! You may bring extra money for concessions if you like.

– Mendota Heights & West St. Paul Park & Recreation Day at the West St Paul Pool  

Have your parents
drop you off at the West St. Paul pool located at 92 West Orme, check-in will begin at 10:00 a.m. We start the day with fun and games, activities and prizes outside of the pool.  We will provide a picnic lunch.  We will swim in the pool from noon to 3:00 p.m. An afternoon snack during one of the pool breaks will be provided. Chaperones will be provided until 3:00 p.m., so please pick up your child by this time.  Remember your towel, change of clothes, sunscreen and extra money if you want to purchase concessions.

Cost:  $8.00/person 
Ages: 6 years of age and older
NO BUS Provided, please drop off your child at 10:00 a.m. and pick-up your child by 3:00 p.m.
at the West St. Paul Pool.

Safety Camp
This experience will last your child a lifetime. Instructors for camp are volunteers from local police and fire departments and Park and Recreation staff.   Topics such as stranger safety, weather safety, drug awareness, animal safety, home safety and first aid are just some of the areas that will be addressed. Each camper will receive a Safety Camp t-shirt.  At the conclusion of the camp on Thursday, campers will join their families for a short program and treat starting at 3:30 pm. 

Camp Dates: August 10, 11, and 12th

Camp Times:
  August 10th: 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
                      August 11th:  8:00 a.m. -3:30 p.m.
                      August 12th: 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Ages: children entering the 3rd & 4th grades in the fall of 2010 
Fee:  $30.00   (all lunches & snacks provided!)

Youth Tennis Programs
Join your friends, join the fun, get and stay fit.  Participants will play and learn via a proven national program, ‘Quick Start’ tennis.  Our tennis programs are ‘Games Based’ in 2010!  We will institute ‘Quick Start’ which was rolled out in Nov. ’07 by the major, national tennis organizations, USTA, USPTA and PTR.  Our head coach and instructor, Terry Olson and his assistants are back for the 2010 season.  The emphasis as in the past will be teaching, playing, learning & enjoying the game of tennis.

Program Schedule:  The 2010 Youth Tennis program runs (6) Weeks; beginning the week of June 14 and ending the week of June 28.  All classes meet on Monday, Tuesdays and Wednesdays (except Little’s Tennis see below).

(No classes July 5 – 8 for Holiday Break) T-Shirt included in all programs!  All participants will need tennis shoes and a tennis racquet.

Cancellations/Bad Weather:  Call the Tennis Hotline (651) 255-1174 One Half Hour before your session.  Lessons will not be made up.

Fun Day:  We have added a fun & games/picnic day on Wed. July 28 from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. (This day is for our Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday programs to wrap up the season with some fun, games, picnic lunch and prizes! In-House and Tennis Team also invited!  This day is in place to makeup any rainouts.

“Little Tennis” for youth ages 4-7 years old (40 min. lessons once a week)
Introduce your young child to tennis! Mini nets & other teaching aids will be used to gear this program to your child’s level.  (A parent/chaperone must stay with child during lesson-please coordinate with other parents in your class to help your child if you are unable to stay.) 
Dates:  Thurs., June 17-July 29 (no class July 8-no rainout /makeup’s)

Beginner Tennis Lessons for Youth Ages 8 yrs and up 
With the Quick Start program beginners will have fun and learn how to play tennis.  They will learn sportsmanship, general etiquette and develop strokes through this program.

Intermediate Lessons for Youth ages 9 and up
This program is for youth that have had some tennis experience.  Terry and his assistants will take them to the next level of training.  You will work with the instructors at your level of play not age.

Intermediate/Advanced Lessons for Youth ages 10 and up
This program is for youth with previous tennis experience or participated in our tennis program last year.  These lessons will take them to the next level of training.  You will work with the instructors at your level of play not age.

Cost: $75.00  

In House League Play Ages 11 and up. You will need to qualify for this program and will be evaluated your first day.  If Terry feels you are not ready for this program your money will be refunded or you can be moved into

Recreational Traveling Tennis Team –A competitive program for ages 10 – 16 yrs.

: 1:00 p.m. – approx. 3:15 to 3:30 pm

Dates:  M & W (coach may also add some Tues. practices TBD)   *Note: Parent car pooling to the matches required-Instructor/Coach is not allowed to drive players (matches will be in close proximity to MH)

USTA JRS- We may put the more competitive players into a USTA Jr. team.  Terry will make final decision.  Please register for the Recreation program above.  An additional USTA Jr. player fee of $19.00, will be collected once players are selected for team.

Both teams will include Team T-Shirt.  Most practice or play dates are scheduled  on Monday and Wednesday afternoons (also some Tuesday dates TBD) and an opportunity to qualify for USTA Section Championships for those playing in USTA Jr. program.  Once registered coach will call with additional information.

Join your friends and family for a great time at the Mendota Heights Par 3 golf course.

SUMMER PLAYHOUSE PRESENTS “NATE THE GREAT”
Come watch our traveling variety show which will be making appearances at both Marie and Mendakota Parks this summer.  This group will provide creative, quality performances free of charge. The shows will include: choreographed performances, puppet shows, songs and dances.  Performances last approximately thirty minutes and are designed to entertain families with young children.  Performances will not be held if it is raining.  Feel free to bring lawn chairs and/or blankets to sit on.

Mendota Heights 3rd Lair - Skateboard Camp
Come join the fun at the Mendota Heights 3rd Lair Skateboard Camp at Rogers Lake Skate Park. This camp is designed for skaters of all levels, beginner - expert.
The basics are taught; balance, pushing, dropping in, skate park safety and etiquette. The 3rd Lair instructors are very experienced and have years of teaching knowledge.
Equipment needed for camp: skateboard and helmet (knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards are recommended).

Date: August 2nd - August 6th

Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (If raining camp will meet under Rogers Lake Pavilion)

Cost: $166.00 for 5 days of camp.

Geocaching in Mendota Heights Parks
Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment. There are 772,065 active geocaches around the world. Enter your postal code at www.geocaching.com and get started on finding geocaches right here in Mendota Heights. We will be introducing Geocaching this summer to children registered in our Summer Playgrounds program. We are looking for volunteers to help out our summer program by hiding a "cache" for us each week (we can provide the "treasure"). Please call and give the coordinates to our Parks and Rec programmer Teresa Gangelhoff. Or if you would like to hide your own treasure in one of our parks or on our trails please call City Hall at 651-452-1850 for permission and reference guidelines & rules found at www.geocaching.com.

   Attention Older Adults in Mendota Heights!  If you are looking for activities and fun check out THOMPSON PARK ACTIVITY CENTER located at 1200 Stassen Lane (off Butler and Highway 52) in West St. Paul. This is our area (District 197 Community Education) 55+ center and Mendota Heights residents are welcome to join classes or take part in any of the activities.

Registration Information
   Deadlines. Most activities have limited enrollment, registration deadlines, and fill quickly. Please register as soon as possible. Registrations will NOT be taken over the phone.
   Non-resident Fee. Non-residents are welcomed to participate in our programs; however, residents will receive priority registration. There is a $5.00 non-resident fee per participant per activity if you live outside Mendota Heights. Exception: youth trip participants will not be charged a non-resident fee. Please include the non-resident fee with regular registration costs when enrolling.
   Refund Policy. A $5 service fee will be charged for individual cancellations made prior to the start of a program or its registration deadline date, if enrollment allows, with the exception of being on a participant waiting list. No refunds will be given after registration deadlines or the start of an activity. Registration fees for programs canceled by the City will be fully refunded.
   Confirmation. There will be no further confirmation after registration. It is your responsibility to be present on the date and time your program begins. You will receive notification if a program is filled, canceled, or changed.
   Participants With Disabilities. Participants with disabilities who are in need of any special assistance or auxiliary aids should notify the Parks and Rec Department at the time of registration to ensure that any need can be met to fully participate and enjoy a program or service.

Data Privacy Act

In accordance with the Minnesota Government Data practices Act, the Parks and Recreation department hereby informs you that the personal information we are requesting of you and/or your child or guardian on our registration form is now considered private.  Private data is available to you and to City staff who need to have this information to perform their duties, but not to the public.  While you may choose to withhold this data, the consequences could be that the City’s recreation staff may not be able to complete our registration and/or you may not receive updated program information, such as schedule changes.
